Recent Works in Stoneware - Birdbath, Bowls, Plates, Vases, Boxes,...
Birdbath #2 replaced the one that was broken when black bear tipped over birdbath and stand in Autumn 2014. I like #2 better than #1.
I'm having lots of fun painting underglazes on bisque-ware, then covering them with Clear Glaze. Design painting is done at my kitchen table, little by little, for an hour or three at a time, sometimes over several weeks. The designs for the two Eleanor Bowls (above) were created a bit at a time over about 5 weeks. In Contrast, the Triangle plates were finished quickly: my daughter "ERG" finished hers in one evening, about 2 hours. I took longer to finish my Triangle "AWG" - maybe 3 hours total, over two days.
The
learning never ends. Gaining confidence with handling clay is achieved
through working, experimenting, and making bowls, boxes, mugs, vases...
all the while continually improving.
I wish Glazing the finished constructions was as easy. For me Glazing is a complicated, wonderful world of it’s own, rich with the need to experiment, and often with surprise endings. Most of my BOXES were created to use for glaze tests, so I could experiment with stain and glaze combinations to use when glazing a much larger piece I made for a wedding gift. The Wedding gift Vase (and many of the BOXES) were textured using one of my favorite paddles, which leaves a windowpane-like pattern in the clay. This impression reminded me of Mondrian or Miró paintings, which led to the color stain choices I used for the Vase (tested first on the BOXES). Pictured at Right are middle stages of making the wedding gift Vase. After the application of colored stain is completed, the next step is covering the entire outside of the vase with Clear Glaze. (Colored Glaze for the vase interior was applied prior to beginning the stain application.) You might be interested to know that the first of the Miró-esque boxes took about 6 hours to paint with stains and glazes. Coloring the Vase took longer than that, but was done at home over many evenings... an enjoyable way to spend an evening. :-) |

Remember, Always be learning, and use every piece as an experiment, especially when it comes to glazing !
